We don’t know yet. People hardly buy any singles in the era of the iPod".
APOP’s new single “Green Queen” will be released this very Friday, November 13th.
As a special for all fans we have compiled an EP rather than a single, with remixes of “Green Queen” and a remix of “Apollo” – all worth more than just a listen!
MEINE FRAGEN AN STEPHAN GROTH (2007) Thanx to Per Aksel Lundgren
1 I would like to ask if he is able to say something about a new album, because I'm wondering what he could mean with "Phase 2", "End of the first phase..." or "Eject disc to enter second phase"...
STP: Hello Sherlock Holmes, good question!
The whole ”phase” thing is about the different phases of Apop (sound/style/concept and image wise) WTE being end of phase 1, Sonic Diary being end of phase 2.
The new studio album that we are currently working on (which is going to be awesome by the way) will belong to the 3rd phase.
The history of Apop has many chapters, and the band has gone thru many phases, but there is more to it than what I just explained…a few more albums and it will be easier to see the whole picture, keep looking for clues ;-).
2 I would like to ask what he thinks about the fact that his CDs always become so expensive and rare.
STP: It’s cool! I’m a record collector myself, and own several expensive and rare records.
Unfortunately we never got around to release much stuff on vinyl, but we are at the moment working on putting out some very limited edition records on vinyl. You guys on the forum will be the first to know as soon as they are ready for release.
3 I think the Harmonizer is one of his best albums but he said the he had gone through difficult times and tried to be positive. I think this is pretty hard and I want him to know that I respect the way he got out of his problems a lot!
STP: Forcing yourself to be positive when all you want is to be negative and destructive is quite hard, but it makes you a better person and solves your problems in a good way.
What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.... What a cliché, but it’s so true!
MEINE FRAGEN AN ANGEL (2008) Thanx to Renzo
1 What is the new album going to sound like?
Angel: OneTwoThreeFour!!! dabbadabbadabbadabbadaaaa daaaaaa diiiiiiiiii.... schriiingplingelingwahwahwah..aaaaaaaahhooooooyeeeeeah... dakkacakkawwooowooiiiiiiii..drrrrrrrrrrrrrrrromph. bangbangbangbangbangcaccaccaccabangbangbangbangbangbangbang!! .... something like that. Well, you get the picture.
2 Which is your favorite Apop studio album? Why?
Angel: Y.A.M.A.T.W. Why? In my opinion it's the best Apop album so far. I've probably heard and played the songs from that album about a million times already, and they still don't make me sick... But what we're working on now is getting even better..:D It will blow you away, man! Stephan has been writing some crazyshitkickassmindblowing songs lately. Can't wait to get all the guitars done.
MEINE FRAGEN AN STEPHAN GROTH [2009] Thanx to Renzo
01. The whole Rocket Science album is so complex and has so much to tell. Are you convinced that most of your fans do understand it?
No, I'm convinced that most of them don't! Most people don't. From the feedback that I get, and from doing interviews and talking with people.
I meet a lot of people all the time, I meet way more musicians and people from the record industry than I meet normal people, and I only get extremely good feedback from people who are into music, even people who are not into electronic music at all, I even have some friends of mine who absolutely hate electronic music, who with this album they kinda were like "Alright, it's not that bad after all, because in this album I only used old vintage synthetizers that are older than I am, to generate like that classic vintage synth sound and I even have people who absolutely dislike electronic music who when they listen to the Rocket Science album they think "Alright, it is done like this then we can kind of live with it".
I have still not heard or read any review or still not gotten any negative feedback where I can actually follow them where I kind of think "Alright, I agree... You're actually right here... This guitars sound bad, or these lyrics are bad, or this chorus is bad". All this negative feedback that I get, there's no substance to it, is not in my interest to bait people but I could easily tear all their arguments apart in one second, because they're very shallow and not very follow up thru arguments that they have.
So back to the question, the responses I get from fans, lots of them... like the same with the song Apollo, most of the Apop fans, they don't even know such a thing as a conspiracy theory about there's no moon landing, yesterday (20th July) was the 40th's anniversary and it was all over the internet yesterday, still there's so many people not even aware that there's actually a quite big percentage of living on the western world who's actually asking questions here, and all the things on the Rocket Science album, of all the conspiracy things that I presented, the Apollo thing is the least important, and people don't even know about it, but now after this album they're aware of it, then I feel like I've really done important part here, because even though if you follow that, if you think that we went to the moon or not, that's not really the question here, the question is that you have to be aware of it, and there's even lots of people who don't even know that there's a lot of questions to be asked regarding the 9/11 incident, and now with the whole swine flu thing, people don't even ask questions anymore, they're ready to accept everything so the point of the whole Rocket Science thing is not to tell about all these conspiracy things, it's about waking people up, with the whole Asleep or Awake thing, you are like "Wake up! Stop thinking if Britney Spears is wearing underwear tonight, that's not important, there are lots of more important things" and there are things that are way more important than music, and I've definitely woken a lot of people up who are now asking questions or people who say "No, no... I don't believe in this conspiracy crap!" but at least now they're aware of it.
It's like turning something on inside people's brain where they're like "Huh... Maybe I should go to Google and do some search here, and figure out what other people are thinking about this and that" and definitely completed that with this release, so...
Do most people understand what this album is about? Absolutely not. Have I woken a shit load of people up? Yes, so in my book that's "Mission accomplished!" You can tell even that the hardcore fans have sit down and followed up on all these conspiracy things and make up their own minds, even when I get messages back saying "Ok, I checked it out, I'm still not believing it but at least now I am aware of it". That's "Mission accomplished" for me.
07. How did you react when GUN Records was closed down? How serious was the harm it did to the success of Rocket Science?
It was a disaster, that’s all I can say. Usually how it works is that when you put out an album, you have in advance done a lot of promotion. Both online, but also for newspapers, radio, TV. You spend tons of money on photo shoots, making videos, booking tours, printing posters, to create a whole promotional package that you do some months in advance before the release. But when the record is out and you go on tour, that’s when the big blow comes in. So when we were on the previous album, on the “You And Me” album, we put out “In This Together” as a single, and we went on tour, and then we put out “Shine On” when everybody was talking about Apop, when everybody was going to the concerts, and we were all over the magazines, and in TV, all the radios, then we put out “Shine On”, and everyone was interested and into it and bought the single, and we had a Top 10 hit. That was done during the tour. So when we started the tour now, after one week, I can’t remember if it was the first week or the second week of the tour, the company went bankrupt, and no more promotion was done. So it was a huge disaster and the main reason it didn’t succeed as well as the previous album. Sales-wise the whole industry is going down the drain, so you’re automatically selling less albums now than what you did three years ago, even Depeche Mode do that or Rolling Stones. But we were about to check in with a huge campaign and a whole promotion stunt, and all of sudden our main source went down, so our whole internet connection went down. Our main website, apoptygmaberzerk.de hasn’t been updated and been dead since that day when they just pulled the plug. So no promotion was done, nothing happened, so it was probably the biggest disaster in Apop history. What we did was that we ended up going out on a tour that was extremely successful; we’ve played sold-out almost the whole way. And we went to Russia and had some really cool gigs there, we went on a tour in the UK. And because we tour so much and played on some really cool festivals and so on, we still managed to pull it off, you know. It worked out but it could’ve been so much bigger, and so much better. So thanks to MySpace, Facebook, and all the fans that have been doing their things online, it all worked out in a way, but it could’ve been way, way better, to put it that way. Again, I think from a financial point of view, it was a huge disaster, but from a personal view I put out the best album I’ve ever done, with the best melodies, the best lyrics. We did the best tour we’ve ever done, we played with really huge bands, and we got hookups in all directions, and I’m actually quite happy with the outcome, but with the financial thing it didn’t turn out very well. Here in Norway we have the band, me being in charge of that, and we have our management in Germany, and we have our management in England, and then we have the record company. It’s those four things that is the driving motor behind whatever happens in Apop lab, to put it that way. So we lost one wheel of the car, and it was the most important, for that promo thing it was the main wheel on that car that we lost. Unfortunately it’s not only Apop who are suffering in the industry; it’s all over the line, worldwide. It’s very tragic and of course we still have the records available for downloads, both legal and illegal. The internet being the main reason for the record industry going down ended up being the media who "saved" this release...
