Dem einen oder anderen dürfte bekannt sein, dass Dave Mustaine, seines Zeichens Sänger, Gitarrist, Hauptsongwriter, Egomane, Teilzeit-Junkie und Gründer von Megadeth vor seiner eigenen Band noch in einer anderen Garagencombo spielte. Die Rede ist von Metallica. Mit James, Lars und einem Bassisten namens Ron McGovney spielte er 1982 den ersten Metallica Gig aller Zeiten, bevor er ein Jahr später gefeuert und durch Kirk Hammet von Exodus ersetzt wurde.

David Ellefson am Bass, Kerry King an der Gitarre (heute Slayer) und Lee Rash hinter den Drums komplettieren das erste Megadeth Team. Nach einer Tour nehmen Chris Poland (g) und Gar Samuelson (dr) die Plätze von King und Lee ein und nachdem man von Combat Records einen Vertrag angeboten bekommt, wird 1985 "Killing..." auf den Markt gebracht.

Ein Jahr später erscheint "Peace Sells...", die Band wechselt aber zu Capital Records, die die Rechte an der Scheibe von Combat kaufen. Nach der anschließenden Tour mit Overkill müssen Chris und Gar die Band wegen Mustaines Ego Problemen verlassen und auf der nächsten Scheibe "So Far..." spielt Jeff Young die zweite Gitarre und Chuck Behler rührt die Trommeln. 1988 wird für Megadeth ein sehr erfolgreiches Jahr, sie spielen unter anderem auf dem "Monsters Of Rock", in Castle Donington mit Maiden als Headliner und treten im Vorprogramm von Dio in Europa auf. Außerdem tut sich Herr Mustaine als Producer der inzwischen als Nevermore bekannt gewordenen Band Sanctuary hervor.

1989 werden Behler und Young an die Luft gesetzt und Mustaine atmet selbige kurzzeitig gesiebt, da er wegen Fahrens unter Drogen eingeknastet und auf Entzug gesetzt wird. Der erste von vielen Folgenden. Im Juli übernimmt Nick Menza den Platz hinter den Kesseln, Ersatz an der Gitarre ist zunächst nicht zu finden. Erst nachdem man ´90 für Wes Craven's SHOCKER den Alice Cooper Song "No More Mr Nice Guy" covert, findet Marty Friedman zu Megadeth, der zuvor mit Hawaii, Cacophony und auch solo schon die ein oder andere Scheibe veröffentlicht hat. Im selben Jahr erscheint "Rust In Peace" und Megadeth spielt mit Slayer, Testament und den Suicidal Tendencies bei den "Clash Of The Titans".

In den folgenden Jahren sind Megadeth auf mehreren Soundtracks vertreten, unter anderem auf "Last Action Hero", "Bill und Teds verrückte Reise" oder "Tales From The Crypt" O.S.T. 1993 nimmt Mustaine in einem Selbstmordversuch eine Überdosis Valium. Nach kurzer Auszeit steht die Band aber schon wieder mit Acts wie Metallica, Aerosmith oder Pantera auf der Bühne und 1994 wird "Youthanasia" veröffentlicht, dessen Cover in einigen asiatischen Länder auf dem Index landet. Es zeigte eine Frau, die Babys an einer Trockenleine wie Wäsche aufhängt.

Im Jahr darauf kommt mit "Hidden Treasures" endlich eine CD mit allen Soundtrack Titeln auf den Markt und man tourt ausgiebig durch Nordamerika und Australien. Friedman bringt mit Menza "Introduction" raus, nachdem ´92 schon "Scenes" in Zusammenarbeit veröffentlicht wurde.

Lee Ving von Fear wird von Mustain zur Kooperation auf der MD.45-Scheibe überredet, die 1996 das Licht der Welt erblickt, ein Jahr vor "Cryptic Writings", der inzwischen siebten Megadeth-Langrille. Dies ist die letzte Scheibe für Menza mit Megadeth, der sich nach einer Knieoperation 1998 auf einmal ohne Job sieht. Diesen hat inzwischen Jimmy DeGrasso eingenommen, der 1999 dann auch "Risk" eintrümmert. Zur Jahrtausendwende verlässt Marty Friedman die Band und wird durch Al Pitrelli ersetzt, der vorher schon bei Alice Cooper und zuletzt bei Savatage aktiv war.

Um den Vertrag mit Capitol Records zu erfüllen, kommt 2000 eine Best-Of-Scheibe mit dem bezeichnenden Namen "Capitol Punishment", die den Abschluss der nicht immer sonderlich erquicklichen Zusammenarbeit zwischen der Band und dem Label markiert. Doch Sanctuary lassen sich nicht lange bitten und signen Megadeth vom Fleck weg. Folglich kommt ein Jahr später "The World Needs A Hero" raus, auf der die beiden Neuen mal zeigen können, was sie drauf haben. Die CD geht erfreulicher Weise wieder mehr in härtere Richtungen und Fans und Presse reagieren fast durchgängig positiv.

Im März 2002 kommt dann schließlich die erste offizielle Doppel-Live-CD "Rude Awakening" in die Läden, welche auch als DVD oder VHS Video erhältlich ist und so gut wie alle Klassiker der knapp 20-jährigen Bandgeschichte enthält. Kurze Zeit später gibt Mustaine überraschend die Auflösung der Band bekannt. Eine Verletzung seines linken Arms macht es ihm auf unbestimmte Zeit unmöglich, Gitarre zu spielen.
