nicole kidman and naomi watts got to know each other during an audition for advertising swimwear in the early 1980's. none of them got the role, but they became good friends.

naomi: 'it might only have been for some trashy swimwear, but we both needed the job! we hadn't got the bodies for it. we got chatting and shared a taxi home because we lived in the same area. we've been friends ever since.'

naomi had moved to australia when she was 14, after her father, who had been sound engineer for pink floyd, had an untimely death in england. she was about a year older when she met nicole.

in 1989 nicole started shooting 'flirting' which is a 'beautifully written coming-of-age story, which maintains a healthy balance between sharp wit and endearing charm and intelligently captures the universal language of insolent teenagers'.

nicole was nicola radcliffe and naomi had the role of janet odgers.

after nicole had become divorced, naomi was at her side; the both attended premieres together, proud to be holding hands, even though nicole towered over naomi in her rediscovered high heels.

nicole on naomi: 'we've shared boyfriends, break-ups, bottles of wine when we thought our lives were over - every single thing you can imagine. she moved into my house when i got divorced and took care of me.'

on november 27, 2001 nicole was proud to present naomi with a movieline magazine award for breakthrough of the year.
