What was new in 2004?

January

My new (and very first) single was released on January 5. It contains three tunes from the "Lost In The Deep Blue" album CD. The tracks are "Ride On A Tiger" and "Love And Reality" as A/B and "Don't Know Where To Go? (I Don't Either)" as a bonus track. More info and a cover scan can be found in the Music section of this site (at the bottom the "Lost In The Deep Blue" page).

I finished the recordings of my part of a "remote improv" project with Eric Wallack. I'm very excited about it as for me it's first collaboration of this kind.

There are new reviews by me at "Aural Innovations", two CD republications of LPs initially issued by the German Jazz label MPS - Volker Kriegel "Spectrum" (originally from 1971) and Albert Mangelsdorff "And His Friends" (originally from 1969), the new CD "For Demolition Of A Sppiritual Framework" by the Tokyo based psychedelic Rockers Marble Sheep, and two improvisational duo releases featuring Luigi Archetti, the current guitarrist of Guru Guru. You find the links in the review section of my journalism site.

Artemi Pugachov updated my entry in his Encyclopedia Of Electronic Music. The Link can be found on the reviews site.

My music got quite a bit of airplay this month (streaming internet radio as well as air broadcasting). UMFM web radio in Canada played some tunes in their shows on Jan 9 and 16, Radio Última Fronteira in Spain played the B-side of my recent single in their show on Jan 17 and "Going Native" from my debut "Nightmares & Escapades" in their show on Jan 31. I'm especially proud that some of my music was played in some of Garry Lee's "The Overflow" shows on Radio Seagull. For me personally it's an unexpected "sensation" that from Jan 23 on my tune "Toy Island (Part One)" is featured on the "50 track list" of Radio Six International for ten weeks. Besides this they presented me in their "Saturday Sounds" show on Jan 24 and their "Instrumental Asylum" show on Jan 29. The link to Radio Six International and their broadcast information can be found on my links page. I have to say thank you to the presenters of the mentioned radio stations and to Renaud Rigart of Zoopa Loop and Tim Jones & Terri~B of Stone Premonitions who helped a lot to get in contact with most of them.

February

As the January edition of "Aural Innovations" just went online on Feb 1 - they changed their format a bit from a strict quarterly schedule to consecutive updates and publish a register when an "issue" is completed - I can use this as an opportunity to remind you that it contains a review of "Lost In The Deep Blue" and and a detailed interview with me - online since late November 2003 that you might have missed...

Increased airplay continued in February. Emusic, a weekly show at WDIY based in Bethlehem, PA and distributed by several small stations in the New England area featured my tune "Planets' Spring Dance" from the album "Megalopolis" in their show on Feb 5. Radio Six International in Glasgow, Scotland regularly plays "Toy Island - Part One" in their 50 tracks list and featured my tune "Fractals" from "Nightmares & Escapades", the one tune that I least expected in any radio show, in their "Chill Zone" shows on Feb 17 and 22. Radio A Última Fronteira played my music in quite a few of their February shows so far, and their listeners could win some copies of my "Selections" compilation. And there was also more airplay by UMFM in Toronto, Canada. By the end of the month some of my tunes were added to the Music4Site internet radio playlist and I was featured in the Alchemical Radio show that was uploaded on Feb 29.

I finally managed to get some mp.3 soundfiles on this website -  you can find the links to three tunes from each CD on the respective album information sites in the "music" area (listen streams at 24 kbps and download files at 128 kbps) and a list with links to all tunes on the music samples site. The tunes are hosted by Universal Metropolis in Toronto, Canada,  a multi media agency that also hosts the UMFM internet radio network.

The e-zine "Nucleus", based in Buenos Aires, Argentine and dedicated to all kinds of progressive Music (with a very broad scope), has uploaded an interview (in English) focussing on my musical and artistic opinions and perspectives. The link can be found at the bottom of the biography site.

I started writing for the German printed music magazine "Moonhead". Their current issue includes a story about the British psychedelic band "The Rabbit's Hat", more stories and quite a few reviews are in the making for their next issue.

March

Now being online in it's current version for a little more than a year this website is about to welcome its 5000th visitor. There will not be just one CD for the 5000th visitor (as this might be too incidental) - but: Among all visitors who send an email with their favorite CD (and their postal address) from now on until the counter is a little over 5000 I'll draw the lot, and five of them will receive a free CD of their choice.

My album "Selections" has made it into the (unranked) February 2004 top 20 list at EMUSIC, a weekly electronic and space music program at WDIY, broadcasted on air in the New England area. Interestingly enough, "Selections" isn't an official album. It's a compilation of tunes from my first three albums intended to provide journalists, labels and radio stations a representative overview of my music. Though it's a free promo CD it seems to have made its way, and in one case it was even reviewed as if it was a regular album. Matt Howarth at Sonic Curiosity calls it "an excellent means to explore Gingeleit's music in an overview, providing samples from his abstract, symphonic and beat-driven styles". So, feel free to ask for a copy of "Selections" if you take part in the "5000th Visitor's Campaign" described above. And you can have it as free give away when you order any other item from my sales page and ask for it.

The German web magazine "Moderne Klangkunst" ("Modern Sound Art") has uploaded a new review about "Lost In the Deep Blue" ending up with the words "What a trip!". You find the link to this review in the reviews section.

Airplay in March included UK's Gary Fosster's Eternal Fusion show on SpydaRadio on Mar 5, the Philadelphia, Pa based Sounds Of Tommorow Shows on Mar 10 and Mar 24, Don Campau's No Pigeonholes show on Mar 14 at the Cupertino, Ca based KKUP radio that's broadcasted  on air in the San Francisco and Monterey Bay area (at 91.5 FM), Radio Six' Chill Zone on Mar 23, the Alchemical Radio shows # 58 and # 59, and a few more appearences on UMFM radio in Toronto, Canada. You can find links to the mentioned stations and shows on the links page.

Sometime around Mar 25 this site has received its 5000th visit - a big thank you to all visitors since Feb 2003 when this site went online in its current shape. The free CD offer (as described above) is still valid for some time. Don't be shy - your email and postal address won't be used for anything but getting you a free CD if you're among the winners - you won't even receive an unwanted newsletter... promise!

April

The new issue # 47 of the UK review mag "Modern Dance" is online now and with it a new edition of my column "Our Man In Germany". This time it's pretty international as it contains quite a few reviews of non German bands for several reasons. My reviews are about republications of 60s/70s LPs by Albert Mangelsdorff and Volker Kriegel, and new CDs by Luigi Archetti, Acid Mothers Temple, Escapade, Marble Sheep, Liquid Visions, ST 37, and Ashtray Boy. As usual, you find the link to the article at the journalism site.

As collaborators in the  musical underground scene Dave W. Hughes, the editor of "Modern Dance" with the musical alias Cousin Silas, and I always seem to be a bit shy to review each other's CDs. But nevertheless I wrote a review about his "Portraits & Peelings" CD in the # 46 edition of his mag, and he returned the favor by reviewing my "Lost In The Deep Blue" album in the current issue. You find the link on the reviews site.

Already in March the Russian "Encyclopedia Of Electronic Music" uploaded a new reviews section, among them reviews of my first three albums. You find the links on the reviews site and the link to Artemi Pugachov's fabulous site on the links page.

The rest of the month was mostly dedicated to writing. The next edition of the German printed music magazine "Moonhead" will contain a title story about the Japanese Psychedelic Rockers Marble Sheep, a really huge (eight printed pages) article about the British Stone Premonitions label on the occasion of their tenth anniversary, an article about the Texas Space and Krautrockers ST 37 and quite a few reviews written by me.

May

May was mostly filled with extra-musical activities. I have a new day job in a town called Schwerin in the former German Democratic Republic (East Germany) from June 1st on which meant a lot of preparation activities: I'll live in a furnished accomodation during June and will have a new appartment by July. My postal address in Mannheim, Germany (to be found on the index page) is still valid for the next couple of months if you'd like to send some review material. Due to the mentioned changes there might be some delay in responding to email as I'll have to use the services of an Internet café during my stays in Schwerin for the next few weeks, I guess.

But besides all this I did a bit of writing/translating: There will be an English version of the Stone Premonitions article for "Moonhead"  mentioned in the April section to be published in the "Aural Innovations" web magazine at about the same time when the next "Moonhead" issue is out (it's now at the printers as I was told).

Though not really being "visible" during the past six weeks or so, I was not forgotten by some of my favorite radio stations. In April and May some of my tunes were played at Live 365 (www.live365.com - they even mentioned one of my tunes in their "This Stations Plays Tracks like..." section), at Claire Kember's daily show at Totally Radio (www.totallyradio.com), in Don Campau's "No Pigeonholes" show on KKUP 91.5 FM in the San Francisco and Monterey Bay areas (www.kkup.com), and more airply on "Sounds Of Tommorrow" (www.drugmusic.com - but they consider music as the drug, and there are no additional substances needed to enjoy their program...;-)). UMFM in Toronto, Canada (www.umfm.net) have announced to play some of my tunes in their big "monster show" during the last weekend in May.

June

I'm "back in life" as far as the Internet is concerned! With the help of a so called "cardphone" (a cell phone with no dialling buttons that you insert in the card slot of a mobile computer) I'm able to browse the web and send and receive email from my current furnished appartment which lets me feel a bit more conneted with the world and garantees you instant reply to any mail again!

Joe Davis (a solo artist in Niles, MI, and member of bands and projects like Pyramids On Mars, Scalded Dog, Blood Of The Dragon and many more) and I agreed that one of my tunes will be featured on his new compilation CD called "What's Up, Mutants?" which has a nice grass rootes concept. Read an excerpt of his call for submissions: "I'm going to start curating a series of CDR compilations and I've sent you this because I'd like you to be on it. Here's how it's going to work: Each artist send's me a track no more than 7 minutes in length (this rule could be bent if it's an exceptional piece). Please send your music on CDR or cassette formats only. This means no DAT's, minidiscs, or MP3's. Include a contact address or email address along with your name or your band's name and song title. I will assemble it with loving care. I will then send each artist one master copy of the CD and artwork. The artists can then make copies to sell, trade, or give away as they choose. Musically, I'm looking for psychedelic rock, space rock, experimental, noise, adventurous jazz, sound sculpture, interesting electronic, ambient, etc. Basically, I can't imagine anything being too strange. I would only reject anything on its being too normal." Joe's plan is an ongoing series, so you can email him at spacereptile@yahoo.com, if you might like to get in contact with him for future collaboration.

On June 2 Live 365 radio again welcomed  their listners as a station that plays tunes by Frank Gingeleit - thanks a lot to everybody at Live 365 - and Radio Six International repeated  a previously broadcasted show of their Chill Zone on Sunday, June 6 - the tune by Frank Gingeleit was "Fractals" from the CD "Nightmares & Escapades". "Fractals" was also played in Don Campau's No Pigeonholes Show at KKUP (91.5 FM in the San Francisco and Monterey Bay areas) on Sunday, June 13. And "Fractals" was again played in the "Sounds Of Tomorrow" show that was uploaded on June 16. I never expected this tune to appear in any radio show but now it's seemingly becoming some kind of an "underground hit"...;-)) A big thank you to all the DJs who played this tune and to all those who are going to play it in the future! UMFM radio in Toronto, Canada played some of my music in their show on the last weekend of June, which was also the presenter's birthday party: Happy Birthday, good luck and all the best, Sea!

I detected a new review of "Selections" on the Space Rock UK website. As this is already the second review of this "unofficial" release I decided to open a "Selections" section on the reviews page.

The current issue of the German printed music mag "Moonhead" is finally out now and you can find three articles written by me:

  • "Grandioser Psychedelic Rock aus Japan: Marble Sheep" (title story including title photography)
  • "Krautrock made in Texas - oder: die Alternative zum 'alternative Rock': ST 37"
  • "Zehn Jahre Stone Premonitions: Happy Birthday" (a huge eight pages coverage of the label's history and development including an interview with Tim Jones and a "SP family tree")
  • Reviews about: Black Sun Ensemble - "Starlight", Albert Mangelsdorff - "And His Friends", Volker Kriegel "Spectrum", Marble Sheep - "For Demolition Of A Spiritual Framework", Marble Sheep - "Meets Circle Triagle Square", Luigi Archetti / Bo Wiget - "Low Tide Digitals", Luigi Archetti / Jan Schlegel - "Silent Surface", Liquid Visions - "From The Cube", ST 37 - "The Insect Hospital", Ashtray Boy - "The Euro", and Captain Trip Records Sampler Vol. 1 - "Japanese Groups Compilation"

Being very restricted concerning computer equipment at the moment due to my current living conditions in a furnished accomodation, you'll have to wait a while before I can put scans of the cover and the articles online. Although international subscriptions and single copy orders of the  "Moonhead" magazine can be made at http://www.moonhead-music.de/index.html?print.htm, I can offer PDF versions of the articles written by me to international readers who email me and tell me why they want or need them. BTW: An English version of the Stone Premonitions article will be online soon at the "Aural Innovations" webzine.

I received a mail by Joey Alkes, member of the band DJ Monkey and frequent reviewer for the LA..Xpress magazine. As this mail shows some of the deepest understanding of my music that I read so far, I asked him for the permission to put it on my website. You find it in the review section. A detailed review of "Lost In The Deep Blue" by Joey is said to appear in the LA..Xpress mag soon.

The British ZEITGEIST mailorder service decided to put my complete catalog on their sales page which will be online in a few days.

By the end of June I received some JPEGs of the the title page and one of my articles in the recent edition of the printed music mag Moonhead. The title pic was taken by me on the ocassion of Marble Sheep's appearance at the Finkenbach festival 2002. I have to admit that I didn't see what I was actually photographing as it was an incidental "overhead snapshot". But as Marble Sheep's Rie Myazaki is a most beautiful lady, this is a beautiful pic too and it makes a great magazine title...

The centerpiece of this edition is surely the coverage of the British Stone Premonitions label on the occasion of their tenth label anniversary:

July

Though June apparently seems to have been the most active month in this year so far, most of it were "fruits of the past" due to previous work... July in fact was much more busy but most of the results will to be seen in the future. I did a lot of writing, and most of it will appear in the next edition of Moonhead magazine which is scheduled for (about) mid September.

In July radio play continued on a little lower level but Sounds of the Future and UMFM kept on playing my music - the latter quite regularly. Thanks a lot!

The most important thing in July was that from now on my complete catalog is listed at the Zeitgeist, Gemm, Musicstack, VIP 24, and Netsoundmusic mailorder catalogs - credit card payment and a professional delivery service are now guaranteed worldwide for all my CDs.

August

It was August 1 that the July edition of Aural Innovations was released and with it the English version of the Stone Premonitions label coverage in the German Moonhead music mag. You find the link on the journalism site.

Artemi Pugachow has once more updated the review section of his Encyclopedia Of Electronic Music that now contains a review of "Lost In The Deep Blue". The link can be found in the new review section on the "Lost In The Deep Blue" site.

As the general review section grew too large which lead to unacceptably long loading times for anybody who doesn't have a high speed braod band access to the Intenet I broke it up and list the reviews for each album on the respective album sites which in themselves are broken up into album info, reviews and download sections. This is only parly done so far as it means a lot of work (and changes of the site structure) and might lead to some site inconsistencies for a short while. Please consider this site as being "under construction" again for a couple of days.

I also revised the link section as some of the sites vanished from the web or changed completely in a way that they no longer qualify for being recommended. This also means that some of the sites mentioned in earlier entries on this news site are no longer active.

UMFM presented an A - Z show of their regularly featured artists, and Frank Gingeleit represented the letter "G".

Finally, you can find my CDs in a real shop for the first time. It's "The Crrrazy Record Store", a department of "Gemischtwaren" in Cologne, Germany. If you happen to be there you can find it at Körnergasse 9, 50823 Köln-Ehrenfeld. As they also sell online, visit their website at www.gemischtwaren.com.

September

September brought quite a bit of more airplay, a new compilation that features one of my tunes is ready now and will be relased soon, and there are new reviews...

Thanks to Gary Fosster for playing me in his Eternal Fusion Special Edition on September 6, Pete for playing some of my music in his Sounds Of Tomorrow Show on September 8, Tim Jones and Terri~B. of Stone Premonitions for the Alchemical Radio show that went up on September 12 features one of my tunes, and Sea of Universal Metropolist for almost weekly considerations on UMFM's Ambient Corner, this month on the 10, 17, and 24 so far...

The "What's Up, Mutants?" compilation announced in the June section is ready now, and the master copies and printables will be sent to the contributing artists soon. It's quite special and unique for this compilation that each artist/band will release his/her/their own copies meant to sell, to trade or just give away to friends. Have a look at this site every now and then to read more.

A new review about "Toy Island" is up at "Improvijazzation Nation", the webzine for truely independent music run by Dick Metcalf aka Rotcod Zzai. You find the link on the reviews site.

"Lost In The Deep Blue" was most prominently reviewed in the LA..Xpress by Joey Alkes, a lifestyle and leisure mag spread in Southern California. I didn't read it so far, but the author said that I'll enjoy it, and a copy of the mag should be in my letter box the other day...

When the LA..Express article (September 16, page 7) came in I was simply overwhelmed as I was called "one of the most inventive and moving new electronica composers today", my music was described as "an aboriginal journey through the deserts and mesas of what could be considered the elemental qualities of human experience and universal consciousness", and my way of playing guitar is ascribed a "virtuosity that is in the league of some of the more time honored prog-rock guitarists". What is most important about this article, however, is that it abandons the sole reference to experimental electronica and avant-garde music where it was mostly filed in before but mentions the name of composers like Dizzy Gillespie, John Faddis, Elvin Jones, Theolonius Monk and Curtis Mayfield for comparisons and altogether sees my main influences in the African-American experimental music of the likes of Sun-Ra, Charly Parker, Eric Dolphy, Charles Mingus and John Coltrane. I never dreamt of an appreciation like this when I started playing music and feel very honored.

October

At the first glance almost no activities this month..., but: I wrote a new edition of my column "Our Man In Germany" for the online edition of the British review mag "Modern Dance" which should be online soon. Moonhead, the German printed music mag that I'm regularly writing for will appear in full color and in a highly increased number of copies, and will be out in a couple of days. Most important, however, was that the German label "Fünfundvierzig" ("Forty Five") and I agreed on a license contract for my album "Lost In The Deep Blue". The program was already remastered at the Hamburg based "Master & Servant" studio, and the release is scheduled for mid February next year.

November / December

Things went a bit different when I knew that "Lost In The Deep Blue" would be released as a label issue. There're quite a few things that remain with you as an artist. Besides this I did some writing: Issue # 7 of Moonhead, released in early November, contained quite a few articles written by me, amongt them a Damo Suzuki portrait with a special reference to his "Inside Network" compilation, a band profile of the Copenhagen based Space Rockers Gas Giant, an essay with the somehow provocative title "The CD is dead - long live the CD-R", and a rather short article about the North of England based newcomers Nothing To Declare. Besides this I wrote the editorial introduction to the first part of a a four piece Hawkwind series and did the translation of the article that was originally written by Scott Heller, and quite a few reviews: Slunky Dide - "Subliminal Meditation" / "Warui Buttai", Cousin Silas - "Portraits & Peelings", Acid Mothers Temple / Escapade - "A Thousand Shades Of Grey", DJ Monkey - "Another Evolution", Merrell Fankhauser - "Rockin' And Surfin'", David Peel / Kan Mikami - Jirokichi Live At Koenji, Speed - "Live At LOFT '85", and some kind of a "retro review" of Xhol Caravan's "Electrip". Issue # 8 was already instores on Dec 15th, and this issue contained the second part of the Hawkwind series - again translated and introduce by me - and a detailed interview with Guru Guru's Mani Neumeier. My reviews in this issue were: Klimperei - "La machine ŕ Triboulot" / "Sérieux", Somebody Famous - "Prisoners Of The Real World", and Keven Brennan - "God Is A Mighty Gourd". Sometime in between I also wrote a new - my fourth - edition of the column "Our Man In Germany" for the British review mag Modern Dance.
