Gloria has the poop on Fidel

Gloria Estefan says Fidel Castro poops his pants.

Really.

We were discussing her upcoming New York concert when the conversation turned to recent news that Castro incinerates his undies in case anyone tries to poison his laundry.

"My theory is that's not the real reason he burns his underwear," the Cuban-born singer joked. "I have a feeling maybe he's kind of [incontinent] lately and maybe he doesn't want anyone seeing the evidence."

Moving on! Estefan just donated $1 million to the Miami Project to Cure Paralysis (no, her spinal rods don't set off airport metal detectors, because they're titanium; I asked), and is hoping to play Newark's own Connie Francis in a biopic.

Which is a bit of a stretch, no?

"No, there's a lot of similarities, especially in her voice and mine," she told me over the phone. "We had a very similar upbringing. The Italian and the Cuban, all the Latin cultures have a lot of things in common."

Estefan, 48, said she hopes to start production next year: "If I don't hurry, I'm going to be playing her mother in the movie!"

Her New York appearance, to benefit the AIDS charity amfAR, will kick off the Cipriani Wall Street Concert Series on Tuesday.
