The 17th Premio Lo Nuestro a la Musica Latina (Lo Nuestro Latin Music Awards) nominees were announced during a press conference in Miami this month.
The hottest names in Latin music make up the list of nominees for the longest-running Latin music award program in the United States, which will air Feb. 24 on Univision.
Salsa music idols Marc Anthony and Victor Manuelle lead the competition with five nominations each, going head to head in tropical categories such as best album, male artist, song of the year and tropical salsa artist.
Pop star Paulina Rubio, banda group Montez de Durango, merengue artists Toros Band and salsa star Rey Ruiz follow with four nods each.
Other nominees include the late Celia Cruz, Puerto Rican heartthrob Chayanne, Carlos Vives, Gloria Estefan, Ricky Martin and multiplatinum rocker Juanes.
Awards are given in 30 categories divided into the five most popular Latin music genres of pop, tropical, regional Mexican, rock and urban, along with the video of the year. Nominees were selected from charts compiled by industry trade magazine Radio & Records from October 2003 to September of this year.
The Premio Lo Nuestro telecast is the highest-rated program among Hispanics in the United States, watched by more than 9 million viewers, beating all other English- or Spanish-language entertainment programs.
