El cuento de hadas tiene en su centro a una mujer con una voz mágica y una mente soñadora que sin embargo funciona como una ecuación matématica

"Bueno, empecemos por decir que soy muy analítica. Esa es mi personalidad. Pero siempre obedezco a mi instinto. Si tengo dos caminos ante de mí y mi análisis se inclina por uno mientras mi intuición elige el otro, siempre me voy con el corazón. Y Emilio es lo mismo. El es Piscis, yo soy Virgo, es decir: polos opuestos, pero ambos creativos. Yo crecí aquí y amo a este país, pero mi parte latina y cubana es definitivamente mi corazón. Hasta en negocios, Emilio y yo nos regimos por el corazón y tomamos decisiones acatando la intuición.

Y a la vista está que sus corazonados han pagado buenos dividendos.

El mundo entero conoce la historia de Gloria y Emilio Estefan, dos muchachos cubanos que llegaron a Estados Unidos cada uno por su lado, sin un centavo, debiendo enfrentarse al problema de la subsistencia.

Olvide todo eso, El valor de Estefan Enterprises se estima hoy en $200 millones. Gracias a un nuevo arreglo firmado con EPIC Records, y una gira mundial, sólo Gloria ganó $47 millones en los últimos dos años. No en vano Forbes, la biblia del mundo de las finazas, la ubica en el número 31 en la lista de las 40 empresas más poderosas del país. Todo basada en la presencia y la voz mágica de una mujer, y la habilidad de un compañero que ha sido comparado con Midas por su instinto para hacer dinero.

Y si usted piensa que alcanzar esta posición sólo cantando es incomprensible, es porque no conoce a Gloria Estefan. Gloria, con su pinta de niña ausente, pequeñita y frágil, que cuando clava en nosotros la mirada, trasmite un escueto mensaje: fuerza.

"Sí" nos dice "yo soy fuerte desde niña. Siempre me sentí fuerte y responsable. Cosas como ver a mi padre en una silla de ruedas y comprender que era irreversible, contribuyeron a ello. Hoy soy más joven que entonces. Fui una niña vieja, cargada de experiencias, obligada a controlar mis emociones.

Es un tributo a esa fuerza interior, que hoy las dos cosas que mejor la definen (además de la voz maravillosa) son su risa y su sentido del humor, que afloran, sorpresivamente, en el momento preciso. Como cuando hablamos de que el dinero no lo es todo, y Gloria dice: "Figúrate, si el dinero lo fuera todo, en aquellos primeros días del exilio, los cubanos nos habríamos suicidado en masa!"

Un tercer factor viene a interferir con mi misión. He llegado hasta aquí a conversar con una artista, una cantante, un ser de ilusión y candilejas. Pero en las tres horas que pasamos juntas en una tarde poco clásica de nuestra voluble primavera, descubrí a Gloria la políglota, la que habla buen francés y está trabajando en su italiano... Gloria la dueña de una filosofía simple y brillante... la que tiene un masterado en sicología y lo aplica a su vida diaria... la maestra de la estrategia cuando se trata de encazar su carrera.

Inevitable tocar el punto de "Gloria!" el album que estará a la venta a principios de Junio. La prensa de 22 países está ya en Miami tras detalles de esta nueva producción, notable porque todo es bailable, sin una sola balada y sólo dos canciones en español: "OYE" y "Cuba libre", "que trata de mis sentimientos hacia Cuba, el lamento de una persona que conoce muchos pueblos y culturas, sin conocer la propia".

"Gloria!" es el album más sensual que he escuchado de ella, pero no me extraño tanto, porque siempre ha dicho que ella y Emilio son muy físicos.

"Sí, lo somos" dice "y tienes razón, yo también cuando revise el album me dí cuenta de que a excepción hecha de dos canciones, una de ellas "Touched by an Angel", que Emilio y yo compusimos pensando en Emily, todos son – rié maliciosamente – muy sensual. Todas son himnos al amor, físico, son entrega franca, tan sensuales como las anteriores fueron espirituales. La verdad" dice riendo, "Gloria!" es ‘party time’ "A veces pienso que con la procimidad del año 2000 estoy empezando a desarrollar una nueva filosofía de vida, que voy a vivr y divertirme como no lo he hecho hasta ahora!"

Luego cambia rapidamente de ánimo. "Tal vez" dice poniéndose seria, "estoy viviendo un resurgimiento como mujer. Cuando se tiene un hijo, especialmente en esos primeros tres años en que uno se sumerge en la maternidad, en mi caso mirando a Emily convertirse en su propia personita, uno empieza a recobrar su identidad, surge de nuevo como mujer, con sus propias apetitos, intereses... ¡y la energía se multiplica! Todo eso me hace sentir muy bien, por lo tanto, el album es muy "up"!

Esta declaración es típica de su manera de expresarse, una mezcla feliz entre su ancestro latino y su educación gringa. No habla "spanglish", pero se deplaza con mucha gracia en ambas culturas haciendo uso de cada idioma en el momento justo. Cuando dice que el album es muy "up", (un album contado todo en inglés) el modismo se justifica. En cambio hablando de su presentación en el Vaticano, con 60 músicos en escena, el Papa sentado en el escenario con ella, y una audiencia compuesta de jerarces de la iglesia, Gloria dice con cómico espanto: "Y yo me dije: pero qué hago yo aquí?" La frase, la entonación y la intención sólo podía haber sido dicha por una cubana.

Elaborando sobre eso, Gloria me aclara su posición: "Para mí fue electrizante, porque yo me crié en escuelas católicas y tengo además un problema con los uniformes y las figuras simbólicas de autoridad. Imaginate, un papá militar, una audiencia de Cardenales, Obispos, Arzobispos y antiguos amigos del Santo Padre...!

Es una excelente raconteuse. Tiene una belleza tranqila y digna, una sencillez casi principezca, y una claridad de pensamiento que actualmente emplea para pesar los pros y contras de una posible carrera cinematografía, evaluándose a coincidencia, poniéndose lentes de aumento para considerar sus posibilidades.

Hollywood le hace guiños hace tiempo.

Se le consideró para hacer "Evita", y también "The Perez Family". Ha tenido conversaciones con la gente de la industria. "Pero a mi me gusta sobre seguro y tal vez empezar con papeles pequeños. He tomado clases de actuación. He studidado guiones. Pero lo que yo busco en un guión con una afinidad con mi forma de ser y pensar. No quiero meterme a actriz sólo para probar que puedo interpretar con éxito a una asesina, demostrando que puedo ser sórdida y negativa si me lo propongo. Yo pienso que quien actúa tiene que responsabilizarse por lo que muestra a la juventud."

La tarde fue larga y hablamos cosas. Del album que mejores recuerdos le ha dejado... "Mi Tierra", por supuesto. "Allí están mis raíces, y el recuerdo de mi abuela"... de Emily que tiene loco a todo el mundo, una pequeñ de Gloria, que a los tres años ya se ha recorrido (y asimilado) el mundo, y conversa como una persona mayor. Ordenada, observadora... de Nayib, su hijo mayor, que la ha dado algunas dolores de cabeza... "¿y cómo no, si su padre todavía se esconde tras las puertas para asustar a la cocinera?.. de la influencia afro antillana en su música... de Gianni Versace, a quien las dos conocimos, quien le hizo un vestido para visitar el Papa que Gloria no pudo ponerse porque "Gianni nunca pudo hacer nada totalmente cubierto"... de la carta que recibió de una española preguntándole si no le asustaba que Emilio hubiera sido su único novio, su único hombre... de su amor por las lenguas románticas...

Dos veces nos interrumpe el teléfono. Una vez es Giuliani, el alcade de New York que le pide ayuda para en evento político. La otra llamada es de Plácido Domingo. Gloria negocia ambas situationes con pases dignos del torero más ducho.

Alguien recuerda "el accidente", y cómo Gloria tiene, a consecuencia de él, dos varillas de hierro sosteniéndole la columna vertebral.

Yo adelanto una opinión muy personal. Creo que Gloria ya tenía una columna vertrebral de hierro, mucho antes del accidente.

And it looks like their intuition has paid hearty dividends. The whole world knows the history of Gloria and Emilio Estefan, two young Cubans who arrived in the United States separately without a penny to their names, confronting subsistence. Forget about all that. The net worth of Estefan Enterprises is estimated at $200 million. Thanks to a new contract with EPIC Records and a worldwide tour, Gloria alone made $47 million over the last two years. A third factor comes to interfere with my mission. I have come to this point talking with an artist, a singer a being of illusion and stage lights. But in the two hours that we spend together on an untypical afternoon during our changing spring season, I discovered Gloria the polyglot, who speaks French quite well and is working on her Italian... Gloria the owner of a simple and brilliant philosophy... the one who has a masters degree in sociology and applies it to her daily life... the master of strategy when it comes to planning her career.

Elaborating about this, Gloria clarifies her position:

"It was electrifying for me because I was raised in Catholic schools and I also have a problem with uniforms and symbolic figures of authority. Imagine, a military father, an audience of Cardinals, Archbishops and Holy Father’s old friends...!" She is an excellent raconteuse. She has a tranquil and dignified beauty near princely simplicity, and a clarity of thought that she is currently using to weigh the pros and cons of a possible film career. She evaluates herself as if putting on eyeglasses to consider her alternatives.

Hollywood has winked at her for a long time. She was considered for "Evita" and also "The Perez Family." She’s had conversations with people in the business. "But I like to be extra careful and perhaps start with small roles. I have taken classes with an affinity to the way I think and am. The telephone interrupts us twice. Once it is Giuliani, New York’s mayor who asks her for help for a political event. The other call is from Placido Domingo. Gloria handles both situations with the moves of her most skilled bullfighter.
