... Just Like Any Other Family

“I get up in the morning around 10, have two cups of coffee (at least) ... my husband is up at the crack of dawn and has already checked on business...”. Typical morning, riht? Well, yes, except this is one of the most widely recognized women in the world: Gloria Estefan.

“Really, we are just like any other family,” she insists. According to Patty Escoto, aide to the Estefan’s, Gloria’s husband, Emilio, takes care of the family business, Estefan Enterprises. On such days, the Estefan’s son Nayib, almost 17 years old, heads off to high school and Gloria spends time with Emily, her two-year-old daughter, before working out.

But typical days are hard to come by for a family that spends a year preparing for a year long tour. Some days there is a photo shoot, which can be an all day affair; on other days Gloria must sign pictures, or may have to spend time in the studio or in an interview.

Gloria is in constant demand from the public and the media. Not to mention that she must be able to create the music for which she is famous.

“Gloria is a night owl,” Escoto says. “She does most of her writing and composing late at night, downstairs in a quiet place, by herself, creating.”

Gloria has been called the most positive role model in the music business. Though she is worth well over $170 million dollars and she and Emilio have built an empire in the music business, she genuinely means it when she says, “we are like any other family.”

But this isn’t any family. This is Estefan Enterprises – a family empire that controls Crescent Moon, a recording studio, owns and manages real estate properties and restaurants – a company with its roots solidly entrenched in Florida.

A family which exists a lifetime away from the little girl who sang alone in her bedroom in a blighted area of Miami to forget her troubles.

In 1959, Gloria Fajardo arrived in Miami after Castro unseated Cuban President Fulgencio Batista. Gloria’s father, José Manuel Fajardo, then a 24-year-old security officer for Batista, gathered his family and fled to Miami on a roundtrip flight on Pan Am for $21. “I still have the unused return ticket,” Gloria boasts.

The Fajardos settled in a Cuban ghetto behind the Orange Bowl. José returned to Cuba, only to be jailed in Havana after the disastrous 1961 Bay of Pigs invasion. In 1963, he was released and returned to Miami where he joined the U.S. Army and was sent to Vietnam in 1967.

While her father was at war, Gloria’s mother had taken a teaching job. Glorita, as she was known, took solace in music. She would spend hours in her bedroom plucking out traditional Cuban songs or the then popular Beatles hits on a guitar. Her 35 year-old father returned from Vietnam in 1968, but the effects of Agent Orange left him mentally and physically impaired. Gloria, just 11, nursed, fed and cleaned him, and also tended to her younger sister, Rebecca, now 33 and president of the newly formed Tribecca Entertainment.

Tending to her ailing father may be what led to the shyness in Gloria’s developing years. Gloria spent a lot of time singing in her room as a way of getting away from the bad feelings outside. But the time she spent alone may have benefited her for life.

In 1975, Gloria entered college at the University of Miami as a psychology major. She attended a wedding where she met Emilio Estefan, whose band, the Miami Latin Boys, was performing. He coaxed her into singing a couple songs and offered her a job. Gloria accepted, and the band was renamed Miami Sound Machine.

Emilio pulled some of the shyness out of Gloria. Singing made Gloria come to life, according to Emilio. And Gloria seems to make Emilio come alive as well.

While Gloria continued her education at the University of Miami, where she graduated summa cum laude in 1979, Emilio worked as a marketing executive with Bacardi.

“Education has always been important to Gloria,” says Patty, who attended high school with Gloria. “She wanted to study and wanted to learn. She relays this to her own children today.”

After graduation, Gloria and Emilio married in a simple ceremony and one year later, their son Nayib was born. Around that time, the Miami Sound Machine was recording exclusively in Spanish with CBS International. Their music was American dance with a strong Latin beat, but America was not yet dancing to their tune. Gloria commented that the band would play before a large stadium in Latin America and then come back to Miami to do a wedding.

In the early ‘80s, Emilio became the strong businessman he is today, pushing and badgering local radio stations to play the music that was hitting in the clubs. That is when Emilio met Frank Amadeo, who had been working for a top pop station in South Florida, Y100.

“The music could sell itself and I knew it would be a hit,” Frank states. Hit it did. Miami Sound Machine became a huge sensation with the 1985 breakthrough hit, “Conga”. The national attention put the band on the map but more importantly the media and the public took note of Gloria, the singer. After “Conga”, Emilio began to take a back seat to Gloria’s soaring career.

According to many who know the Estefans, it is Emilio who re-invented Gloria time and again until he created an image he could sell to the world. “He is the businessman, the deal maker,” Gloria has said.

But the ‘role reversal’ does work for this couple. “Emilio may have an idea for a song and Gloria will put it together,” Escoto says. “Gloria may ask Emilio to listen to a new song she created ... It is the beauty of the relationship that they are not set in one mold.”

Emilio manages the business and has little presence on stage with Gloria. “I would love him to come out [on stage] with me, but he doesn’t want to do it. He needs to be everywhere at once.” And he is at his best doing just that.

While Gloria reigns over artistic control, Emilio deals with band issues and stage designs when preparing for a tour. “One does not function without the other,” explains Frank. “They had a great relationship to begin with and they can work through anything,” Patty adds.

Patty Escoto is a testament to the bond created by the Estefans. She and Gloria attended Our Lady of Lourdes High School together in South Miami, Florida. After high school she kept in touch with Gloria, which became increasingly difficult as the success of Miami Sound Machine grew.

Patty had worked as a talent coordinator with Univision, a Spanish television channel. About four years ago, she called Emilio about job opportunities with MTV Latino or Sony, who were building corporate bases in Miami. He suggested she work with their new studio on Miami Beach.

“I did not want to jeopardize the friendship by working together,” Escoto says. “But Emilio expressed that the friendship was most important and we would be straight-forward and honest.”

Patty Escoto is Emilio’s personal assistant and handles an array of duties under Estefan Enterprises.

Many other employees with Estefan Enterprises are old friends or trusted acquaintances. It is part of the giving back that the Estefans work so hard to accomplish. The Estefans have their own charity as well as giving time and funding for various charities and community organizations. “Giving is very personal for (Gloria),” Escoto says. “She does not do it for the recognition but for herself, from the heart.”

When it comes to giving, one of the most important gifts that Gloria Estefan has given women is her success – a success that has opened doors for contemporary female performers who are just starting out. While Gloria strived for recognition, male bands such as the Rolling Stones and the Bee Gees were topping the charts.

Gloria encourages women to strive for their goals. “If you have a dream, don’t let anything get inyour way,” she says.

Today women are active in all parts of the music industry. A well written song can make the difference in the success of the music. Women today own their own publishing companies. “Catalogs are sold over and over again,” Patty states. “Who would know that Turn the Beat Around, which was a remake by Gloria, would be such a success.”

The Estefans received a Grammy Award for each of the two Spanish language albums. Gloria has a star on the Hollywood walk of Fame. She and Emilio have more than 20 chart topping hits, nine mulit-platinum-selling-albums, and have sold over 60 million albums worldwide.

Gloria has been able to achieve simultaneous worldwide notoriety in Latin, Dance and Adult Contemporary music markets. According to John Lannert, Latin-American-Caribbean bureau chief for Billboard magazine, “she’s the only Latin artist to have had major cross-over success.”

Gloria is the true creative energy behind the music. She writes most of her own songs and though loves performing, finds composing the most fulfilling part of her career.

As parents, Gloria and Emilio practice a mix of support, love and strict discipline with their son, Nayib, and daughter, Emily. Nayib has aspirations in the music business and is quite talented, according to Gloria. “They are supporting him but not controlling his music,” Patti says. “Gloria spends a lot of time with Emily. In fact, while in the womb, Gloria played music against her beller for Emily to hear.”

Family life is important to the Estefans, to the extent that Gloria does not want to tour again for several more years.

“I want to stay home until Emily starts school,” explains Estefan, unwilling to give up quality family time.

The music and the business will always be of utmost importance to Gloria and Emilio but since the tour ended this summer family is the primary focus.

... Como Cualquier Otra Familia

“Me levanto por la mañana alrededor de las 10, me tomor dos tazas de café (por lo menos) ... mi esposo se levanta al amenecer y ya a esa hora ha revisado los negocios que necesiten su atencion...” ¿Una tipica mañana, verdad? Bueno, sí, excepto que ésta es una de las mas reconocidas mujeres en el mundo: Gloria Estefan.

“Realmente, somos como cualquier otra familia,” ella insiste. De acuerdo a Patti Escoto, asistente de los Estefan, el esposo de Gloria, Emilio, es el que cuida del negocio de la famila, Estefan Enterprises. En dichos dias, el hijo de los Estefan, Nayib, que casi tiene 17 años, antes de hacer sus ejercicios.

Pero dias asi tipicos no son abundantes para una familia que pasa un año en la preparacion de una gira artistica. Hay dias que requieren sesiones de fotos, que puede tomor todo un dia, otro dia Gloria dedica las fotos autografiadas, o pueda que tenga que dedicar tiempo en el estudio para una entrevista.

Gloria este en demanda constante del publico y de la prensa. Sin mencionar que ella debe crear la musica que la ha hecho famosa.

“Gloria es como un baho en la noche,” dice Escoto. “Mucho de lo que escribe y compone lo hace tarde de noche, en los bajos en un sitio tranquilo de su hogar, ella sola, creando.”

Gloria ha sido reconocida como el modelo mas positivo en su papel en la industria de la musica. Cuenta con un valor de mas de $170 millones de dolares donde ella y Emilio han construido un imperio en la industria de la musica, y ella se expresa genuinamente cuando dice, “somos como cualquier otra familia.”

Gloria escribe y compone tarde en la noche

Pero ésta no es cualquier otra familia. Esta es Estefan Enterprises – un imperio familiar que controla Crescent Moon, un estudio de grabaciones, son dueños, y administradores de bienes raices y restaurantes-una compañia con profundas y solidas raices atrincheradas en la Florida.

Una familia que existe de un tiempo atras cuando de niña cantaba sola en su habitacion en una humilde area de Miami para olvidar sus penas.

En 1959, Gloria Fajardo llego a Miami después que Castro derribara al presidente cubano Fulgencio Batista. El padre de Gloria, José Manuel Fajardo, en aquel entonces un joven de 24 años, oficial de seguridad de Batista reunio a su familia y vino a Miami con un boleto de ida y vuelta de Pan Am por $21. “Todavia guardo el boleto que no usamos,” alardea Gloria.

Los Fajardo se situaron en un barrio cubano detras del Orange Bowl. José regreso a Cuba y fue encarceladoen la Habana después de la desastrosa invasion de Bahia de Cochinos en 1961. En 1963, fue puesto en libertad y devuelto a Miami donde se enlisto en el ejército de los Estados Unidos y enviado a Vietnam en 1967.

Mientras que el padre estaba en el frente de batalla, la madre de Gloria logro un trabajo como maestra. Glorita, como la llamaban, busco refugio en la musica. Pasaba horas en su habitacion tocando en su guitarra tradicionales canciones cubanas o los entonces populares numeros de los Beatles. Su padre, de 35 años, regreso de Vietnam en 1968, pero los efectos del Agent Orange lo dejaron con dificultades mentales y con impedimentos fisicos. Gloria, con solo 11 años, lo alimentaba, cuidaba y aseaba a la vez que atendia a su hermana menor Rebecca, hoy de 33 años y presidenta de la nueva Tribecca Entertainment.

El atender a su enfermo padre puede haber creado timidez en los años de crecimiento de Gloria. Gloria pasaba largos ratos en su habitacion cantando como un escapa a los malos momentos del mundo que la rodeaba. Pero ese tiempo que paso en soledad puede que la beneficiara después por vida.

En 1975, Gloria asistio a la Universidad de Miami cursando la carrera de sicologia. Asistio a una boda donde conocio a Emilio Estefan quien tenia una banda y tocaban esa noche. El le pidio que cantara un par de canciones y le ofrecio trabajo. Gloria accedio y la banda recibio el nuevo nombre de Miami Sound Machine.

Emilio quito mucha de la timidez de Gloria. El canto le daba vida, de acuerdo a Emilio. Y Gloria tambie parece darle vida a Emilio a su vez.

Mientras Gloria continuaba su educacion en la Universidad de Miami, donde se graduo summa cum laude en 1979, Emilio trabajo como ejecutivo de mercadeo en la Bacardi.

“La educacion siempre ha sido importante para Gloria,” dice Patti, quien asistio a la escuela secundaria con Gloria. “Ella queria estudiar y queria aprender. Ella se lo transmite a sus hijos hoy en dia.”

Después de la graduacion, Gloria y Emilio se casaron en una sencilla ceremonia y un año mas tarde nacio su hijo Nayib. En aquel entonces, la Miami Sound Machine grababa exclusivamente en español con CBS International. Su musica era baile americano con fuerte ritmo latino, pero América aun no bailaba a su ritmo. Gloria comento que la banda tocaba en un gran estadio en Latinoamérica y después venian y tocaban en una recepcion de boda.

En los años 60, Emilio se convirtio en el fuerte hombre de negocios que es hoy en dia, buscando e insistiéndole a estaciones radiales locales que tocaran la musica que estaba resonando en los night clubs. Fue entonces cuando Emilio conocio a Frank Amadeo, quien habia estado trabajando con una estacion de gran audiencia pop en el sur de la Florida, Y100.

“La musica se introducia sola y yo sabia que seria un éxito,” dice Frank. Exito fue. Miami Sound Machine se convirtio en la gran sensacion con el numero “Conga”. La atencion nacional coloco al grupo en el mapa pero mas importante aun, la prensa y el publico conocieron a Gloria, la cantante. Después de “Conga”, Emilio asumio una posicion de apoyo en la grandiosa carrera de Gloria.

De acuerdo a muchos quienes conocen a los Estefan, fue Emilio el que reinventaba a Gloria una y otra vez hasta que creo la imagen que pudo promover al mundo. “El es el hombre de negocios, el de los acuerdos,” ha dicho Gloria.

Pero esta dualidad de papeles funciona bien para esta pareja. “Emilio puede tener una idea para una cancion y Gloria es la creadora,” dice Escoto. “Gloria puede que la pida a Emilio que escuche la nueva cancion que ha compuesto ... es una bella relacion donde no estan limitados a un patron.”

Emilio administra el negocio y tiene poca presencia en el escenario con Gloria. “Me encantaria que el pudiera salir en escena conmigo, pero no quiere. Necesita estar en varios lugares al mismo tiempo.” Y él esta en su medio cuando es asi.

Mientras Gloria reina sobre el control artistico, Emilio trata con cuestiones de la banda y diseños de escena cuando preparan una gira artistica. “Uno no funciona sin el otro,” explica Frank. “Tenian una grandiosa relacion desde el comienzo y pueden producir lo que se propongan,” agrega Patti.

Patti Escoto es un testamento a la alianza creada por los Estefan. Ella y Gloria asistieron a Our Lady of Lourdes High School en South Miami, Florida. Después de la secundaria, se mantuvo en contacto con Gloria, lo que se convirtio mas dificultoso a medida que el éxito de Miami Sound Machine seguia aumentando.

“No queria afectar la amistad al trabajar juntos,” dice Escoto. “Pero Emilio expreso que la amistad era lo mas importante y que seriamos claros y honestos.”

Patti Escoto es la asistente personal de Emilio y se encarga de una extensa variedad de asuntos de Estefan Enterprises.

Muchos de los otros empleados de Estefan Enterprises son viejos amigos y personas de confianza. Y es en parte el estar agradecidos por lo que los Estefan han logrado con arduo empeño. Los Estefan tienen sus propias organziaciones caritativas y donan de su tiempo y fondos a varias organizaciones de la comunidad. “El dar es algo muy personal para Gloria,” dice Escoto. “No lo hace por el reconocimiento, lo hace por ella, de corazon.”

Cuando se refiere a donaciones, uno de las mas significativos regalos que Gloria ha contribuido es su éxito – un éxito que ha abierto puertas para cantantes femeninas contemporaneas que comienzan. Mientras Gloria luchaba por reconocimiento, los Rolling Stones y los Bee Gees dominaban la cartelera.

Gloria alienta a las mujeres a que luchen por alcanzar sus metas. “Si tienes un sueño dorado, no dejes que se te impongan barreras,” expresa.

Hoy las mujeres son activas en todas los segmentos de la industria de la musica. Una pieza musical bien escrita puede ser el factor decisivo en el éxito de la pieza. Hoy en dia las mujeres son dueñas de compañias publicitarias. “Los catalogos se venden una y otra vez,” dice Patti. “Quién diria que Turn the Beat Around que Gloria dapto, fuera tal éxito.”

Los Estefan recibieron un Grammy Award por cada uno de los dos discos en español. Gloria tiene su estrella en el Hollywood Walk of Fame. Ella y Emilio tienen mas de 20 hits en la cartelera, nueve discos multi-platinum y han vendido mas de 60 millones de discos mundialmente.

Gloria ha podido alcanzar la fama mundial simultaneamente en mercados de musica latina, baile, adultos y contemporanea. De acuerdo con John Lannert, jefe del buro de
Latino-América y el Caribe para la revista Billboard, “ella es la unica artista latina que ha logrado el éxito a través de una gran diversidad de audiencia.”

Glroia es la verdadera energia creativa detras de su musica. Escribe la mayoria de sus canciones y aunque le encanta la escena, encuentra en la composicion la parte que le brinda mas satisfaccion.

Como padres, Gloria y Emilio practican una combinacion de apoyo, amor y estricta disciplina con su hijos Nayib y Emily. Nayib tiene aspiraciones es la industria de la musica y tiene gran talento, de acuerdo a Gloria. “Lo apoyan pero no le controlan su ... Como Cualquier Otra Familia musica,” dice Patti. “Gloria pasa gran parte de su tiempo con Emily y antes de que ella naciera, Gloria le ponia musica cerca de su vientre para que Emily la oyera.”

La vida familiar es muy importante para los Estefan, al extremo de que Gloria no quiere salir en gira artistica por unos años. “Quiero estar en casa hasta que Emily comience la escuela,” dice Gloria, renuente a sacrificar el tiempo de la familia.

La musica y la empresa seran siempre de gran importancia para Gloria y Emilio pero ya que la gira artstica ha terminado este verano, la familia es lo primordial.
