Das Besondere an Runrig ist, daß sie das beste Beispiel für kulturelle Verschiedenheiten sind. Diese erste schottische Band hat mit dem traditionellem Folk im Hintergrund angefangen, ging weiter zu einem höheren Bereich in der Pop/Rock Branche, weiß dies gut miteinander zu verbinden und ist die berühmteste Band nördlich von Carlisle. Die Band spielte das erste Mal 1973 in der Kalvin Hall in Glasgow. Sie bestanden damals aus drei Personen: Rory MacDonald, Calum MacDonald und Blair Douglas. Donnie Munro kam im folgenden Jahr zu der Band. Zu diesem Zeitpunkt verließ Douglas die Gruppe und wurde durch Robert MacDonald ersetzt. Leider starb Robert 1986 an Krebs. Ihre erste Aufnahme, Play Gaelic, erschien bei dem Schotischen label Lismor Records. Zu dieser Zeit hatten sie noch nicht das Geld, um durchgehend aufzutreten. Wie auch immer, mit dem Erlös des Albums machten sie den Schritt und machten ihr eigenes Label, Ridge Records, und fingen an mehr Auftritte zu machen. Nach dem Erscheinen von "Highland Connection" kam Iain Bayne zu Runrig. Als dann auch noch "Recovery" erschien, war klar, daß Runrig nicht nur ein weiterer folk/rock act war. Die Musik brachte immer das gälische Gefühl und die Tradition rüber. Richard Cherns kam zu Runrig und 1986 wurde er von Peter Wishart ersetzt.

Bald bestand Runrig aus Donnie Munro, Rory und Calum MacDonald, Peter Wishart, Iain Bayne und Malcolm Jones. 1987 spielen große Konzerte in Canada, Ost-Berlin und waren Vorgruppe von U2 im Murrayfield Stadium in Edinburg. 1989 erreichte die CD "Searchlight" die Top 10 in den UK charts. Ein TV-Auftritt hatte eine große Resonanz der Zuschauer und dann spielten sie 5 Konzerte in Glasgow´s Royal Concert Hall, die alle ausverkauft waren. Das Video "City of Lights" erreichte die Top 10 der meist verkauften Videos in UK. "The big Wheel" erreichte Platz 4 in den UK-Charts und das open Air concer am Loch Lomand war mit 45.000 Leuten bis auf den letzten Platz gefüllt. Im September 1991 stürmte "Hearthammer" die UK top 30, weiter mit "Flower of the west" (Platz 43 UK-Chats) und dazu kam eine riesige Tour durch Europa und die UK. Die Touren gingen weiter bis 1997 Donnie Munro ankündigte, die Band wegen seiner Politischen Karriere zu verlassen. Es gab ein Abschiedskonzert in Stiling, daß wieder bis auf den letzten Platz ausverkauft war.

Im selben Jahr suchte die Band eine(n) neue(n) Sänger(in) und kam schließlich zu dem Kanadia Bruce Guthro. "In search of angels" war das erste Album, das mit Bruce aufgenommen wurde. Darauf folgte das aktuelle Album "The stamping Ground". Die Konzerte sind nicht mehr ganz so voll, wie zu früheren Zeiten, aber es lohnt sich auf jeden Fall die CD im Schrank zu haben und wenigstens ein Konzert besucht zu haben. Nach dieser CD verließ auch Peter Wishart Runrig um, wie Donnie, seine Politik Karriere anzugehen. Er wurde von Brian Hurren ersetzt, der die letzte Tour schon mitspielte.

The phenomenon of Runrig is an extraordinary example of cultural differences. This premier Scottish group has emerged from the traditional folk background to a higher profile in the pop/rock field and is arguable the most popular band nortth of Carlisle. The group first played as a three piece, featuring Rory MacDonald, Calum MacDonald and Blair Douglas in the Kalvin Hall, Glasgow in 1973. Donnie Munro joined the folliwing year. Eventually Douglas left the group and was replaced by Robert MacDonald. Sadly, Robert died of cancer in 1986. Theri first recording "Play Gaelic" appeared on the Scottish Lismor Records Label. At this time they were still not preforming in a full-time basis. With the extra credibility of an album behind them, Runrig took the step of setting up their own label, Ridge Records, and started to preform on a full-time basis. After the release of "Highland Connection" the group then added Iain Bayne to the line-up. By the release of "Recovery" it was clear that the band were more than just another folk/rock act. The music still retained it´s Gealic feel and the narrow boundaries of the folk arena. The keyboad player Richard Cherns joined the group and although he left in 1986 and was replaced by former Big Country member Peter Wishart.

After numeros changes of line up ther current group of Donnie Munro, Rory and Calum MacDonald, Peter Wishart, Iain Bayne and Malcolm Jones performed successful cocerts in Canada and East Berlin in 1987 and played support to U2 at Murrayfield Stadium, Edinburgh. Chart success followed, in 1989 with "Searchlight" almost making the Top 10 in the UK charts. Much touring followed. A TV broadcast of a live performance elicited huge response from viewers, to the extent that five concerts in Glasgow´s Royal Concert Hall sold out and their subsequent viedeo "City of Lights" sold well, reaching the Top 10-selling videos in the UK. The highly-acclaimed "The big Wheel" reached number 4 in the UK charts and the open air concert at Loch Lomond was attended by 45.000 people. "Hearthammer" reached the UK top 30 in September 1991, followed by "Flower of the west" (UK number 43) together with successful tours of Europe and the UK. 1997 Donnie Muro left the band to do his political career. Runrig gave a farewell concert at Stirling, which also was sold out.

The same year the band was searching for a new singer and get the canadian Bruce Guthro. "In search of angels" was the first album which was recorded with Bruce. After that followed the actually album "the stamping ground". The concerts are not that full as it was the time with Donnie but you should have the CD in your cupboard and one of the concerts. After that CD Peter Wishart also left the band for the same reason like Donnie: Politics. He was replaced by Brian Hurren who did the last tour.
