1988 gründeten die Klassenkameraden Jim Lindberg (Vocals), Fletcher Dragge (Guitar), Jason Thirsk (Bass) Und Byron McMackin (Drums) die Punkband Pennywise. Mit ihrem Musikstil sprachen sie die Californische Punk- und Hardcoreszene sehr an und wurden smit auch berühmt. 1989 erschein ihre Debut EP "A Word From the Wise", nachdem Lindberg die Band verlassen hatte. Thirsk musste aufgrund dieser Situation den Gesang übernehmen und Randy Brandburg kam zum Bass. Durch den steigenden Bekanntheitsgrad von Pennywise wurde auch Brett Gurewitz vom Label Epitaph auf die Band aufmerksam und sie unterschrieben einen vertrag. 1991 wurde dann das nach der Band benannte Album "Pennywise" bei Epitaph produziert und Lindburg wurde wieder aufgenommen. Mit ihm wurde kurze Zeit später "Unknown Road" eingespielt und auch 200.000 mal verkauft. Trotz Anfragen von vielen Labels blieb Pennywise Epitaph treu und nahm 1995 ihre dritte Platte ("About Time") auf. Während der Arbeiten zu "Full Circle" 1996 beging Bassist Thirsk Selbstmord. Aufgrund dieses traurigen Umstandes kehrte Randy Bradburg zu Pennyiwse zurück und mit Verspätung erschien dann 1997 endlich "Full Circle". das bis jetzt aktuellste Album der Band trägt den Namen "Straight Ahead" und wurde 1999 veröffentlicht. |
